Civil Rights Unit

In this section of Tales of 5th Grade, the students will have an open discussion about how the characters they met through this unit impacted their own lives.  Through these life lessons, students learned how young children can make a difference when they believe in something.  Which character taught you the most?  Which Carver Pillar of Character did that character teach you?  Share your thoughts and learn from each other.

  1. During the Civil Rights Unit, we watched two movies, Ruby Bridges, and Selma, Lord, Selma. My favorite movie was Selma, Lord, Selma. Both of the movies were very informational. I had a lot of fun learning about the Civil Rights Movement!!

    1. I totally agree with Hannah D. we had a wonderful time learning about this but, some of the information was like, did this really happen? So I recommend to Miss Murray (sorry but again) to explain more after a few days after you watch the movies. After/during the movies I for one was in shock during the movies.

    2. I thought the best character was Ruby because she did not give up. She taught me the pillar of trustworthy because she would be a good friend.

    4. I don't understand what Emily is saying. I think Mrs Murray did a fantastic job explaining and helping us understand this unit. I also agree with Jackson I think Ruby Bridges was a great fighter and I was in shock with how terrible people from the United States of America would treat HUMAN BEINGS. :( :(

    5. Tanner, this is what I said. We need people in the world that can do what Ruby did, and it would make a bigger difference in the world if it was a younger person. Would you do what Ruby did or would you tell your mom and/or dad that you don't want to go to that school and just stay at your old school.
      See my point?

    6. I know but you also said that you wished Mrs. Murray explained a little more and I think Mrs Murray did a great job explaining and also agree with Emily S. that it will make a HUGE difference in the world if it was a younger person that did what Ruby Bridges did. I personally think that I would not be brave enough to go to a school full of racists and knowing that every single day of my life that there is someone out there that know matter if they know me or not I would know I am HATED. Don't you think that would be scary. I am so sorry for everything Ruby Bridges had to go through.

    7. Yeah, I know what you mean Tanner. I wouldn't be able to do that either. I also want to give a HUGE thank you to Ruby's teacher. She did what most people wouldn't do, stand up and teach a little black girl. I wish people would have just accepted the way people look. Everyone has the right to be on this plant no matter what they look like every single person is important in this world. I just wish that would be able to happen. Ok, I think I got my point in.
